Place of origin

The city of Tabriz on the northern border of Persia has always been a melting pot of different ethnic and religious groups, due to its location at the crossing of numerous caravan routes. Although the city is located in eastern Azerbaijan, the dialect spoken in Tabriz is closely related to the Turkish language. At the bazaars in Tabriz, handicrafts and especially rugs from the surrounding villages were and are traded.

Patterns

The luxuriant flower motifs of this Tabriz are elegant and varied. The graceful vegetative symbols representing flowers, leaves and branches are artfully intertwined.

Material

The pile of this Tabriz has been hand-knotted from cork wool and silk. Cork wool is a particularly fine, almost velvety knotting yarn. Cork wool is taken from the neck, belly and the insides of the legs of the sheep and is of particularly high quality. The pattern of this Tabriz is highlighted with shiny pure silk, which is manually extracted from the cocoons of the silk moth. The silk elements create a shimmering contrast and let the colors, depending on the lighting, shine in different nuances. The weft and warp threads of this Tabriz are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.
