Place of origin
Needlepoint is an English term for a style of embroidery, which has established itself in Germany as a term for rugs produced through embroidery. There is a variety of embroidery techniques.
The kilim stitch and its variation, the stem stitch, form patterns that look like knitted fabric. The kilim stitch pattern has horizontal ribs; those of the stem stitch are vertical. Both patterns are composed of rows of diagonal stitches, with the stitches in every other row running in opposite directions. In the stem stitch, backstitches are worked between the kilim stitch rows. Both stitches are suitable for large and small pattern areas.
Gobelin embroidery is an imitation of pictorial embroidery, named after the Gobelin manufactory. In contrast to the warp knitting technique, which creates colored areas by inserting different colored weft threads into the tensioned warp threads, in Gobelin embroidery the crossed threads of the backing material are embroidered diagonally with colored embroidery thread. The character of the picture is determined by skillful stitching with a few color shades.
Needle painting is when color transitions are created in the depictions that are reminiscent of painted pictures. In needle painting, satin stitches are interlocked and nuanced in subtle shades of color. The stitches are set close together, the direction of the stitches follows the shape of the pattern. Needle painting is often combined with stem stitches, split stitches and knot stitches.
This Needlepoint rug has been embroidered in China. The pattern is inspired by the floral ornaments of the classical French Aubusson and Gobelin rugs.
Patterns
The luxuriant flower motifs of this Needlepoint are elegant and varied. The graceful vegetative symbols representing flowers, leaves and branches are artfully intertwined.
The embellished edging (border) forms a excellent contrast to the center and creates a transition at the edge of the rug.
The repeating elements in the center field of this Needlepoint rug have no specific center (so-called repeating pattern). The repeating pattern has a calming but not boring effect. Rugs with repeating patterns are also called patterned.
The background of this Needlepoint is black. The border features black and light brown.
Material
Chinese rugs are hand knotted from silky shiny wool. For the production of high quality Chinese rugs the coat of the Tibetan goat is used. The knot density is, as is typical in Chinese rugs, relatively low and the pile is shorn long.
Wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties: Due to wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on the indoor climate and muffles sound.
