Place of origin
Formerly, people in eastern Iran lived off agriculture and livestock breeding. Rugs were knotted only for personal use. Only when the governor of the provincial capital of Meshed around 1830 was in search of outstanding rugs for his palace, did rug production develop there. The well-known rug maker Amini had his high-quality rugs knotted in the small village of Moud (also Mood, Moudt, Mud) and thus gave the rugs of this region their name. A larger production site developed in the neighboring city of Birjand, so that Mood rugs are also sold under the name Birjand.
The color scheme of strong blue and red on a beige background is common to all Moud rugs. Knotting is done using an asymmetrical knot. On the back, Mood can be recognized by the white warp threads shining through.
Patterns
The abstract, geometric composition creates the simple elegance of this Moud. The pattern flatters the design of the room and does not take the attention away from its furniture, decoration and architectural elements. It blends in fantastically with any surroundings and subtly complements the interior design of a room..
The edge of the rug is decorated with an edging (border). The border forms a excellent contrast to the center.
The repeating elements in the center field of this Moud rug have no specific center (so-called repeating pattern). The repeating pattern has a calming but not boring effect. Rugs with repeating patterns are also called patterned.
The background of this Moud is beige. The border features rusty red, blue gray and light brown.
Material
The pile of this Moud has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The weft and warp threads of this Moud are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.
