Place of origin
The central Persian city of Keshan (also Kashan) lies between the slopes of the Zagros Mountains and the Persian desert areas. Due to its climate and the caravans that passed through the country, it was, at least until the Safavids moved their seat of government to Isfahan, a flourishing metropolis known especially for its fabric and rug production. Even today it is still influenced by the elegance and splendor of that era. The Kashan rugs are artistic textile products made according to ancient traditions. The production in Kashan took place traditionally in the houses of the weavers. The pile is typically knotted from extremely soft wool and is, therefore, particularly dense and compact.
Patterns
The edge of the rug is decorated with an edging (border). The border forms a beautiful contrast to the center.
In the middle of the central field of this Kashan is the symmetrical center, also called medallion. The design of the field is arranged in such a way that it gives the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.
The luxuriant flower motifs of this Kashan are elegant and varied. The graceful vegetative symbols representing flowers, leaves and branches are artfully intertwined.
A special highlight of this Kashan is its signature. The signature documents the production in one of the most renowned weaving workshops in Kashan. The signature in Arabic characters is an expression of the individuality and noble origin of this rug.
The background of this Kashan is light green. The colors blue gray and light green dominate the overall impression. The border features blue gray, beige and rusty red. The dark blue center combines the colors blue gray and beige.
Condition
You are not the first to enjoy this Kashan. It has had owners before you who have cherished and used it. It was hand knotted about 1970. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. We have not restored this Kashan, because we think it is as it is a special charm. If that's what you would like, we will of course restore the rug for you. Either way, this Kashan will provide you with satisfaction for decades to come.
Material
The pile of this Kashan has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The weft and warp threads of this Kashan are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.
