Place of origin
Ghom is a relatively recent place of origin for Persian rugs. The city Ghom (also Gom, Ghoum, Goum) is located in the center of Iran, about 100 km south of the capital city of Tehran. Since building on an old tradition of rug-making was not an option in Ghom, patterns were and are adopted from other areas. With time, however, a unique style has emerged from this. The silk rugs from Ghom are among the most famous and highest quality rugs in the world today. The panel of Ghom rugs often has a light background and is decorated with finely drawn medallion patterns or continuous boteh or vase patterns.
Patterns
The luxuriant flower motifs of this Ghom are elegant and varied. The graceful vegetative symbols representing flowers, leaves and branches are artfully intertwined.
The embellished edging (border) forms a excellent contrast to the center and creates a transition at the edge of the rug.
In the middle of the central field of this Ghom is the symmetrical center, also called medallion. The design of the field is arranged in such a way that it gives the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.
A special highlight of this Ghom is its signature. The signature documents the production in one of the most renowned weaving workshops in Ghom. The signature in Arabic characters is an expression of the individuality and noble origin of this rug.
The background of this Ghom is off white. The colors terracotta and gold dominate the overall impression. The border features terracotta, blue gray and off white. The dark red center combines the colors gold and blue gray.
Condition
This Ghom has a story. It was hand knotted about 1980. It has been thoroughly cleaned and is in good but unrestored condition. We have not restored this Ghom, because we think it is as it is effect. If that's what you would like, we will of course restore the rug for you. Either way, this Ghom will provide you with satisfaction for decades to come.
Material
The silk of the pile of this Ghom allows the colors forming the pattern to shine in different nuances depending on the lighting. It makes this Ghom a real jewel and creates a cozy and at the same time very elegant and premium atmosphere in the room. Silk is manually extracted from the cocoons of the silk moth. Since individual silk threads are extremely long, the result is very thin yarns, which are nevertheless tear-resistant under low stress. Smaller rug knots can be made with this thin yarn, which create finer patterns. Therefore, the finest rugs in the world are hand-knotted made of pure silk. In this Ghom even the background is made of pure silk. Due to the thin but durable material of the weft and warp threads, a particularly fine knotting and, therefore, a particularly fine pattern is feasible.
