Origin
Mahal is a West Persian carpet provenance, named after the city and the province of Mahallat.
The Mahallat region around the city Sultanabad (formerly Arak) developed into an important center for knotting Persian export carpets from the 1870s. The English import company called Company Messrs. Ziegler & Co. Ltd. played a significant part in this. a Swiss merchant, who also opened a branch office in Mahallat in 1883.
Also known as Farahan, Mahal, Ziegler-Mahal or simply Ziegler designated carpets were made in the surrounding villages Western color and pattern specifications tied. The mix of European design specifications in lighter, calmer coloring and classic patterns in the style of the Farahan and Sultanabad Carpets were very well received in Europe.
The success was huge and Ziegler carpets became an international mark of quality. The exquisite course of the multi-petaled flowers is particularly impressive on Zigler carpets. Well-preserved antique Ziegler carpets achieve record prices, especially in the USA. These antique Ziegler designs have been rewoven in high quality in Pakistan and India for several years. .
The newly launched Ziegler carpets made of handspun and naturally colored wool are part of a revival of hand-knotted carpets. The return to traditional techniques began in the early 1980s, driven in part by the so-called DOBAG initiative. Initially, reproduction concentrated on the Ziegler carpets described above. As a result, the reproduction of almost all traditional Persian patterns began. This is how adaptations of antique carpets as well as contemporary designs with the charm of an antique carpet were created. This antique Mahal is a collector's item. He is t around 110 years old and that's why it's a really special piece. Antique carpets, like this Mahal, are still very popular and are sold at top prices by renowned auction houses.
Pattern
The lush floral motifs of this meal are elegant and varied. The graceful vegetative symbols depicting blossoms, leaves and branches are artfully intertwined.
The decorated border (border) forms a wonderful contrast to the center and forms the transition at the edge of the carpet.
The repeating elements of this Mahal rug have no specific center. The recurring repeat pattern is calming but not boring. carpets with repeat pattern are also referred to as patterned.
The background of this mahal is dark red. The edge is designed in the colors dark blue, dark red and light brown.
Condition
You are not the first to like this Mahal. It has had owners before you who have valued and used it. He became approx. 1910 hand knotted. We cleaned it thoroughly and lovingly restored it. It is therefore in very good condition despite its age.d.
material
The technique used to produce the materials for the pile of this memorial is over 200 years old. The wool was with natural colors colored and hand spun. Dyeing with natural or vegetable dyes is more complicated, expensive and time-consuming than dyeing with chemical dyes. For a bright red, for example, you need around one kilogram of ground madder root as a dye per kilogram of wool. For a strong yellow that is not too pale, you even need two kilograms of the dye dyer's woof per kilogram of wool. Spinning the wool is also time-consuming and labor-intensive. In addition, fewer and fewer people know how to spin wool by hand.
But the effort is worth it: Dying with natural colors means that the high-quality wool retains its natural fat content. With natural colors colored and hand-spun wool creates fascinating, iridescent patterns. The charm of handspun wool with its slight irregularities and natural tones unfolds as a contrast in modern interiors but also in rooms that are furnished in a more traditional or country style. The weft threads of this mahal consist of Cotton. For the warp threads was X used.
