Place of origin
Shirvan rugs are hand-knotted in the eastern Caucasus in the Shirvan region. Shirvan rugs are knotted from exceptionally fine wool and have a flat pile. Old Shirvans are highly valued and very admired among collectors in Europe. It is not unusual for them to have a knot count of up to 300,000 kn/sqm.
The wide border is characteristic of the Shirvan rug. A wide main stripe is framed by 2 - 6 subsidiary stripes. The field is often dominated by imaginative geometric designs. The characteristic color of these rugs is often blue, but there are also red and ivory knots. The multi-colored patterns result in a fine and versatile color scheme. This old Shirvan is more than 40 years old and a true collector's item.
Patterns
The abstract, geometric composition creates the simple elegance of this Shirvan. The pattern flatters the design of the room and does not take the attention away from its furniture, decoration and architectural elements. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.
The embellished edging (border) forms a glorious contrast to the center and creates a transition at the edge of the rug.
The repeating elements in the center field of this Shirvan rug have no specific center (so-called repeating pattern). The repeating pattern has a calming but not boring effect. Rugs with repeating patterns are also called patterned.
The background of this Shirvan is blue gray. The border features beige, rusty red and dark blue.
Condition
You are not the first to appreciate this Shirvan. It has had owners before you who have cherished and used it. It was hand knotted about 1925. It has been thoroughly cleaned and only partially restored condition but is in good condition. We have not completely restored this Shirvan because we think it is as it is effect. If you would like, we will of course restore the rug further for you. We can restore almost any rug to an almost perfect condition.
Material
The pile of this Shirvan has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The backing (weft and warp threads) of this Shirvan is made of virgin wool.
