Place of origin
Hamadan (also Hamedan) rugs are knotted in the vicinity of the city of Hamadan in the northwest of Iran. Hamadan is one of the oldest cities in Persia and is situated in the middle of a well irrigated, fruit-growing area on the banks of the Qareh River, at the foot of the Zagros Mountains. Rug making in this region is a centuries-old tradition. Hamedan rug is a collective name, because in Hamedan, farmers' and nomads' rugs come to market from many surrounding villages. A typical feature of the rugs from the Hamadan region is that they are knotted on a single weft using the Turkish knot. This means that one weft thread is added after each row of knots. Persian rugs are usually knotted using two or three wefts. This old Hamadan is more than 40 years old and a true collector's item.
Patterns
The abstract, geometric composition creates the simple elegance of this Hamadan. The pattern flatters the design of the room and does not take the attention away from its furniture, decoration and architectural elements. It blends in fantastically with any surroundings and subtly complements the interior design of a room..
The edge of the rug is decorated with an edging (border). The border forms a excellent contrast to the center.
In the middle of the central field of this Hamadan is the symmetrical center, also called medallion. The design of the field is arranged in such a way that it gives the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.
The background of this Hamadan is beige. The border features dark blue, beige and curry. The dark blue center combines the colors beige and light red.
Condition
You are not the first to appreciate this Hamadan. It has had owners before you who have cherished and used it. It was hand knotted about 1940. It has been thoroughly cleaned and only partially restored condition but is in good condition. We have not completely restored this Hamadan because we think it is as it is effect. If you would like, we will of course restore the rug further for you. We can restore almost any rug to an almost perfect condition.
Material
The pile of this Hamadan has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound. The weft and warp threads of this Hamadan are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.
