Place of origin
Bright colours and simple patterns: that is what kilims are known for. Kilims (also Qilim) have traditionally been produced for personal use only. Nomads and farmers used and continue to use their kilims as rugs on the ground, but also as tent or wall hangings, blankets, cushions or bags. Because kilims were constant companions in everyday life, their patterns, regardless of how naïve they may seem, always carry a personal message and meaning for the weavers and their families.
In Europe, kilims from Turkey, the Caucasus region, Iran, Afghanistan and the Turkmen cultural area are particularly well-known and popular. In fact, in all countries where rugs are knotted, rugs are also hand-woven. This kilim was woven in the region of Gharabagh (also Karabakh) in Azerbaijan. Floral motifs on a dark ground, which are widespread in the Caucasus, are characteristic of Gharabagh kilims. This old Gharabagh Kilim is more than 40 years old and a true collector's item.
Patterns
The embellished edging (border) forms a beautiful contrast to the center and creates a transition at the edge of the rug.
The luxuriant flower motifs of this Gharabagh Kilim are elegant and varied. The graceful vegetative symbols representing flowers, leaves and branches are artfully intertwined.
The repeating elements in the center field of this Gharabagh Kilim rug have no specific center (so-called repeating pattern). The repeating pattern has a calming but not boring effect. Rugs with repeating patterns are also called patterned.
The background of this Gharabagh Kilim is dark brown. The border features purplec and gray beige.
Condition
You are not the first to appreciate this Gharabagh Kilim. It has had owners before you who have cherished and used it. It was hand woven about 1900. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it lovingly. Therefore it is in very good condition despite its age.
Material
The pile of this Gharabagh Kilim has been hand-knotted from high-quality virgin wool. Virgin wool is obtained through the gentle shearing of sheep. Virgin wool is a sustainable, natural raw material with a number of impressive properties; due to the wool's natural fat content, the surface repels water droplets and is thus naturally impervious to dirt. Wool also offers excellent thermal insulation, has a regulating effect on living climate and muffles sound.
