Place of origin
Gabbeh rugs are knotted by nomads living in the province of Fars, near the city of Shiraz. In Persian Gabbeh is the name for high-pile rugs, on which people slept. Classical Gabbeh have imaginative, naive geometric patterns and are very colorful. Today's modern Gabbeh is mostly plain with monochrome designs. Still even today you can find stylized patterns depicting the everyday life of the nomads, such as goats, camels, dogs, plants or people in the rugs. Gabbeh rugs mostly have natural cream, brown and grey tones, but you can also find them in vivid yellow, red or blue. This old Gabbeh is more than 40 years old and a true collector's item.
Patterns
The abstract, geometric composition creates the simple elegance of this Gabbeh. The pattern flatters the design of the room and does not take the attention away from its furniture, decoration and architectural elements. It creates a pleasant atmosphere without dominating the style of the room.
The edge of the rug is decorated with an edging (border). The border forms a excellent contrast to the center.
In the middle of the central field of this Gabbeh is the symmetrical center, also called medallion. The design of the field is arranged in such a way that it gives the impression that the medallion is floating on the field.
The background of this Gabbeh is dark blue. Furthermore, the color rusty red dominates the overall impression. The border features gray beige and blue gray. The rusty red center combines the colors dark blue and beige.
Condition
You are not the first to appreciate this Gabbeh. It has had owners before you who have cherished and used it. It was hand knotted about 1960. We have cleaned it thoroughly and restored it lovingly. Therefore it is in very good condition despite its age.
Material
Gabbehs are knotted by hand from hand-spun wool and dyed with natural dyes. The handspun wool gives the rugs a grainy but soft surface. Traditionally, Gabbeh rugs were used for sleeping. They invite you to sit and fiddle around in the living room, but are also very suitable for hallways and dining areas.
Handspun wool is always somewhat irregular. During dyeing, natural dyes are absorbed differently. The rug appears more lively, due to the so-called color jumps (abrash), i.e. light-dark color shades. The color changes of the pile yarn are always across the length of the Gabbeh and make the rug impervious to soiling. The weft and warp threads of this Gabbeh are made of cotton. This versatile material is tear-resistant and stretchable and, therefore, ideal for a durable backing fabric.
